Sleep Apnea Treatment Without CPAP: What to Ask

If CPAP is difficult, the next step is a conversation with your sleep clinician. Other options exist, but they need individual selection and follow-up.

Start with the reason CPAP is difficult

CPAP is an effective treatment for many people with obstructive sleep apnea. Discomfort, dryness, mask leakage, or difficulty tolerating pressure may sometimes be addressed by the treating team. Tell them what is happening before abandoning therapy.

Searching for sleep apnea treatment without CPAP is understandable, but the best alternative depends on the diagnosis, severity, health conditions, anatomy, and your preferences. Do not change prescribed treatment on the basis of an online article or improvement in snoring alone.

Custom oral appliances

For selected adults, a clinician may recommend a custom dental appliance that helps maintain airway space during sleep. A mandibular advancement device positions the lower jaw forward. It is different from a general night guard designed primarily to protect teeth.

Dental health, gum support, jaw symptoms, and the ability to tolerate the appliance matter. Follow-up is needed to check fit, tooth or bite changes, comfort, and effectiveness. Objective sleep assessment helps establish whether breathing is adequately controlled. Our TMJ evaluation approach explains why jaw history should be part of that conversation.

Other options are diagnosis-specific

Depending on the patient, medical care may include weight management, positional strategies, selected medication, surgery, or other treatments. Some people use a combination of approaches. An ENT or sleep specialist can explain which options are relevant to the underlying condition.

Myofunctional therapy or orthodontic approaches may be discussed in selected circumstances. They should not be promised as universal replacements for CPAP, and pediatric care differs from adult care. At Bruno Integrative Dentistry, coordinated care includes referrals for ENT, myofunctional therapy, and airway orthodontic evaluation when appropriate.

Questions for your next appointment

Ask: What type and severity of sleep apnea do I have? Can the current CPAP difficulty be addressed? Am I a candidate for an oral appliance? Who will provide the treatment and monitor side effects? How will we verify that it works?

Bring your sleep-study results to an airway-focused dental visit in Austin. Our sleep and snoring page explains how Dr. Bruno coordinates dental assessment. If you are unsure whether the problem is snoring or apnea, read the difference between them first.

Common Questions

Is a store-bought snoring device enough?

A device should not substitute for diagnosing suspected apnea. Appropriateness, fitting, side effects, and follow-up need clinical consideration.

Can I stop CPAP while I try exercises?

Discuss any treatment change with your sleep clinician. Exercises do not establish that apnea is controlled, and untreated apnea can carry health risks.

Does Dr. Bruno provide every alternative?

No. Dr. Bruno provides dental evaluation and care within the practice’s scope and coordinates referrals. Medical and surgical options are managed by the appropriate clinicians.
